The Tile Editor opens in a new window when you click on any field of the island. This is the principal tool for designing your islands.

With a normal left mouse click you select one field. Several coherent fields (the selected area) are selected by dragging,  multiple isolated ones by using the Ctrl Key (the one you use to get your soldiers on a ship big grin). You can select a rectangle by clicking one corner with the left mouse button and another corner with Shift + left mouse button.

Tile EditorOpen and close the branches of the tree menu just like a directory structure, and select the field type you want to set the selected area to. Image and name appear below.

At ID you can alternatively enter the numeric field ID (if you happen to know it big grin), e.g. of special features not listed like the Monument.

Ori stands for the orientation of the field, i.e. it allows you to rotate the field. As 1602 A.D. has four visual angles, each field must exist from four sides and therefore be possible in four orientations in the Island Editor. You can either rotate a field with the Rotate button or enter its orientation number. Note that the range is from 0 to 3, not from 1 to 4.

Checking Keep orientation allows you to set multiple fields to the same value but to ignore the current setting of the Ori field. Every field will keep its current orientation. Otherwise all new fields must have the same orientation, i.e. that one you entered.

Then there is the selection box below. Here you can choose between two basic modes of operation:
Pick tiles allows you to select one or more fields as described above. If only one field is selected it appears in the Tile Editor. In this mode you can only change the fields with the Change button. In contrast to this, Draw tiles allows you to draw on the map with a pen. In this mode the Change button doesn't work.

Thus, the Change button transmits all your changes to the currently selected fields, whereas the Select button next to it will show you all fields of the same type as that one you selected.
